Large Pores And Why They Occur
A pore is an opening in the skin where the hair follicle allows for lubrication from the oil glands below the surface. Sometimes these glands can overproduce causing large pores to appear as they allow for the oil to secrete. These are usually seen around the nose as this is where most of the oil glands are located. They can also appear in the T-zone or the areas of the forehead, chin and nose.
Improper cleaning will result in trapped cells, dirt and oil. Dehydrated skin, hormonal changes and excess oil secretion can all add to the problem. Sun damage and genetics also play a factor, as does smoking or an improper diet.
Nearly 78 percent of the time leaving makeup on overnight is the cause. It is important to cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate the skin twice a day to prevent problems. Protecting the skin with sunscreen will also help as the sun will damage the production of collagen and elastin causing it to lose its elasticity which keeps pores tight and small. The sun thickens the skin and causes cells to collect giving the impression of a larger pore size.
The skin will produce more oil during puberty and the pores will enlarge to accommodate this. Excess oil forces pores to expand to release the oil. When treating acne and blackheads it is important not to squeeze the skin as it will stretch.
There are treatments available such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser resurfacing and deep pore cleansing treatments. Topical treatment with Vitamin A that includes Retin A will unclogs the pore. Alpha and Beta hydroxy acids will prevent pore enlargement by stimulating collagen and elastin production and exfoliating.
At home one can exfoliate twice a week to keep the skin clean and prevent large pores. There are products available over the counter to control surface oil, some contain tea tree oil and peppermint. There are creams that will minimize the size of the pore and moisturizers that contain retinal, vitamins and natural ingredients to increase collagen production. Tightening facial masks and steam will aid in cleansing and keeping the pore size small.
