It is generally acknowledged that insomnia is simply an inability to sleep which leads to problems with performing your usual daily life. As far a treatment is concerned the course of action that must be followed will depend on the class of insomnia you suffer from since the condition is divided into 3 separate forms of insomnia:
Transient insomnia is the mildest form of the problem and generally lasts no more than one or two weeks.
Acute insomnia is a type of the condition where symptoms persist beyond a few days and are frequently encountered for anything up to about a month.
If symptoms continue for over a month then the condition is categorized as being chronic insomnia.
Beer and medications might cause insomnia and, if you are currently being prescribed medicines by your doctor then you may need to make certain your insomnia is nota side- effect of this treatment. Ordinary routines such as consuming coffee and smoking may also contribute to your insomnia, as can stress and anxiety or pain from an injury or continuing health-related problem. Lastly, women may also have problems with insomnia because of hormonal changes in the course of such times as pregnancy or menopause.
Although your physician will certainly be able to assist with your insomnia, there are a variety of things that you can do by yourself. For example, if you drink a lot of coffee or tea then make an effort to cut down and, if you smoke cigarettes, cut down here as well. Better still, sop smoking cigarettes altogether if at all possible. Get some good fresh air and physical exercise on a daily basis, but do not workout too soon before bedtime. Also, do not go to bed hungry but, likewise, do not go to bed on a full belly. Cut down on the alcohol consumption and try to keep those late nights to a bare minimum by retiring at around the same time each night. Lastly, decrease the stress in your life to a minimum and make time to unwind in the hour or two before going to sleep.
If in spite of your own efforts your insomnia remains then do not be afraid to talk to your physician. Drugs may very well help and there are also various therapies which you can try including meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy.
