Frostbite occurs when body tissue or skin is confronted with freezing temperatures. This can happen over the short or prolonged timeframe dependant upon the temperature and wind chill. * If you cann't get immediate medical treatment, then an area affected needs to be immersed in warm (not hot) water. This type of water temperature mustn't be greater than 104 degrees or needs to be comfortable to touch.
* When the area affected is ears, nose or cheeks, use warm cloths and get 20 to 30 minutes keeping the cloths warm.
* If domestic hot water is not available, the area affected can be warmed using body heat. Frostbitten fingers can be heated by placing from the armpit.
* Over the warming process, severe swelling, burning pain and complexion changes may occur. If the skin is soft and sensation returns, the warming process is carried out.
* The frostbitten area mustn't be rubbed using snow or massage. This can cause further damage.
* Do not use direct heat from your stove, heating pad, heat lamp, fireplace or any other similar fire. This might boost the likelihood of burning the victims area affected.
* Blisters mustn't be disturbed.
* The victim should not smoke or drink alcohol-based drinks. This could restrict the circulation of blood.
* The frostbitten area mustn't be thawed out if it can't be kept thawed out. Damage can be worse if your tissue re-freezes.
Frostbite Prevention:
* Keep in mind factors, such as extreme cold, high winds, wet clothes and poor circulation.
* Clothing needs to be made for cold conditions which will include, mittens (not gloves), water resistant, wind proof, layered clothing. Two pairs of socks (cotton alongside skin), hat or scarf that covers the pinnacle and ears
* Find shelter early in case you are caught within a severe snow storm.
* To keep up body heat increase training.
When to get professional frostbite treatment:
* In the case of severe or very severe frostbite.
* If normal color or sense of the affected will not return.
* If symptoms develop such as fever, discoloration or drainage from your area affected.
