How Relaxers Straighten Your Curly And Wavy Locks

There are many reasons why people, women and men alike, are going for chemically straightened hair. For starters, some have the notion that straightened locks suit them best rather than their natural curls. Others say that chemically straightened hair can take hours off of their usual beauty routines before going to work.

There are also those that say chemically straightening is better compared to other straightening methods like ironing since treatments are not done daily. Many also say that chemically straightened hair seems more natural in comparison to hair straightened through ironing.

Chemically straightened hair procedure

Chemical straightening of the hair is called as relaxing in some circles. In some circles, it is used interchangeably with hair rebonding. Experts would say however that the latter, although also a chemical straightening procedure, also imparts sheen and softer texture to the hair. To have chemically straightened hair the procedure would usually begin with creams or lotions being applied to your locks.

The chemical in the relaxer will then break down the disulfide bonds in the hair consequently softening, loosening, and relaxing the natural curls. After a specific length of time, the cream is washed off from the hair using warm water. A neutralization formula is then applied to the hair to restore the hair's pH. Application of hair conditioners post-straightening is also necessary to replenish the natural oils removed during the procedure. Hair straightening procedures usually take an hour or so.

Treated hair will typically remain straight for a month or so, but this can differ considerably depending on how fast your hair grows. You have to know though that hair relaxing is not ideal for everybody. Before having your hair relaxed, insist that your stylist perform a strand test. This will help you see if your hair can stand up to the strong alkali or relaxers that will be utilized. Foregoing this essential step can lead to disastrous results, ranging from brittle hair to patchy hair loss.

While home hair straightening kits are widely available today, it is still best to leave this task to the professional because they would know the right techniques and measures to prevent common issues like local irritation safely and effectively.
