Most people think that only teenagers suffer from acne breakouts, however, even as adults, a lot of men and women find themselves in the same predicament. Adult acne is different from teen acne in both appearance and how they can be treated. In teenagers, acne marks usually appear as tiny bumps, blackheads or whiteheads on the face, especially the forehead, chest and back. This is because teen skin is more likely to be stickier and get clogged than adults. In adults, they usually appear on the lower part of the face especially around the mouth and jawline and usually look like deeper nodules or red papules in those areas. Fine little bumps like those that usually appear in teenagers can still occur, though they are much less common.
Most medications are geared for teenagers' oily skin, which might not be good for adult skin which tends to be drier. Over-the-counter products containing benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid can be good for smaller blemishes like whiteheads and pustules, but a stronger prescription may be needed for deeper adult acne.
Women are more prone than men at any age to get acne because of the hormonal fluctuations in a woman's cycle that can trigger these breakouts. This can happen during pregnancy, perimenpause, menopause and at certain times during a woman's cycle when she is producing more or less of specific hormones in her body. Hormone-based treatment such as birth control pills can be good for long-term treatment as it usually reduces acne occurrence in women. However, this should only be taken with proper advice from your doctor since any kind of hormonal treatment may have some side effects depending on your health condition. Problems with the immune system and the stress hormone cortisol can also be a factor in aggravating acne among women. Since adults are more exposed to the elements and have more stress instigators in their life, this can have a negative effect on their skin and their overall physical appearance.
Proper skin care comes hand-in-hand with having a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, sleeping well, eating healthy and managing your stress levels. When using any kind of beauty product, make sure that the ingredients are non-comodegenic so as to not clog your pores and cause breakouts. If you regularly use makeup, you may want to consider switching to mineral makeup brands that contain natural minerals instead of synthetic ingredients and petrochemicals. Remember to always keep your face clean and well-moisturised, and use products that are right for your skin type. What worked for you as a teenager may no longer work now that you are older, and you may have to switch beauty products to ones that also have anti-aging benefits.
