My family has a history of teeth and gum problems, it's in our hereditary make-up that we have weakened teeth enamel and are susceptible to gum problems. Over the years, my parents have increased their research to promote our family's oral health and fight back against cavities, tartar accumulation, gingivitis and even receding gums.
Currently my mom has observed that she is suffering from this condition. Her gums have been very sensitive lately, not just to cold food or drink, but even to moderately hot drinks especially when she drinks her tea or takes a bit of a hot soup. A quick trip to the dentist ended up with her being diagnosed with receding gums. And from then on week after week of careful observation, we all can visibly see that her gum line is receding. We chanced upon this checklist to know if you have the same problem too:
1. Appearance of bright red swollen gums
2. Bleeding when pressure similar to brushing is applied
3. Gums have a "tight" feeling
4. Tenderness of the gum tissue
5. An almost invisible line where the gums used to be and the roots of the teeth become visible
6. Some cases have pus once the swollen gums becomes inflamed
The oral sensitivity level rises drastically once the teeth are exposed when it is supposed to be covered and protected by the tissues. Because of this, my mom's daily diet has changed as she can no longer afford to aggravate her teeth and gums. But when it comes to the treatment, it's already difficult to find something when it comes to regeneration and receding gums without costly dental surgery procedures.
The only thing you can do now is to prevent it from worsening further.
¢ Do brush your teeth regularly. The main contributing factor in receding gums is bacteria, so it is important to clean them up and kill them with anti-bacterial ingredients found in your toothpaste and mouthwash. An added bonus would be flossing, which gets to the unreachable places in between the teeth.
¢ Don't use a hard brush, switch to fine, soft bristles even if it means buying a more expensive brand. Clean your mouth regularly but ensure that you don't damage your gums in the process.
¢ Be conscious of your diet. Just because there is a heightened sensitivity to food and temperatures doesn't mean you have to skip meals to save yourself from pain. Eat vitamin c rich food and leafy green vegetables more.
